Understanding Weight Limits in Skydiving: What You Need to Know
Skydiving is an exhilarating adventure that draws thrill-seekers from all walks of life. Whether you're a first-time tandem jumper or an experienced skydiver, understanding weight limits is crucial for ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. At Skydive Milwaukee, we prioritize safety above all else, and part of that includes adhering to specific weight guidelines that are designed to protect both participants and our equipment.
Why Weight Limits Matter
Weight limits in skydiving are not arbitrary; they are carefully calculated based on factors that impact the safety and performance of the jump. Here’s why weight matters:
Equipment Capacity: Each parachute and harness system is designed to support a maximum weight limit. Exceeding this limit can compromise the integrity and safety of the equipment.
Freefall Stability: The balance and stability of a skydive are influenced by the weight of the tandem pair or solo jumper. Excessive weight imbalances can affect the freefall and landing phases of the jump.
Safety Regulations: The United States Parachute Association (USPA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) set guidelines to ensure the safety of skydivers. These regulations include weight restrictions to mitigate risks during the jump.
Understanding Skydive Milwaukee’s Weight Limits
At Skydive Milwaukee, our weight limits are in place to ensure the safety and comfort of our guests. Here’s what you need to know:
Tandem Skydiving: For tandem skydives, where a certified instructor is paired with a participant, weight limits typically range from 200 to 250 pounds. This range ensures that both the participant and instructor can safely enjoy the jump. There is an additional charge for customer’s over 200 pounds.
Solo Skydiving: If you’re pursuing solo skydiving and working towards your license, weight limits can vary slightly based on the specific aircraft and equipment used. Our team will provide clear guidance based on your individual circumstances.
Why Weight Limits Can Vary
Factors such as the type of aircraft, weather conditions, and available instructors can influence weight limits on any given day. Our experienced staff at Skydive Milwaukee are trained to assess these factors and provide guidance accordingly, ensuring that every jump meets our stringent safety standards.

How much of a risk is skydiving?
Skydiving: an exhilarating experience that offers a unique rush unlike any other. But along with the thrill comes the question: How risky is skydiving, really? Let's delve into the statistics to get a clearer picture.
Skydiving: an exhilarating experience that offers a unique rush unlike any other. But along with the thrill comes the question: How risky is skydiving, really? Let's delve into the statistics to get a clearer picture.
Reserve Parachute Use and Injuries
In 2023, there were 4,913 reported instances of reserve parachute use. While this might seem alarming at first glance, it's crucial to understand the context. Modern skydiving equipment is designed with safety in mind, and reserve parachutes are there as a failsafe in case of emergencies. The fact that reserve parachutes were deployed nearly 5,000 times indicates that safety measures are working as intended, providing a backup when needed most.
When it comes to injuries, approximately six percent of skydiving enthusiasts reported experiencing an injury requiring medical treatment in 2023. Ankle injuries from landings were the most common type reported. While any injury is cause for concern, it's worth noting that the percentage of injuries is relatively low considering the adrenaline-fueled nature of the sport.
Fatalities: Putting the Numbers into Perspective
One of the most crucial metrics for assessing the risk of skydiving is the number of fatalities. In 2023, there were a total of 10 civilian skydiving fatalities in the United States. This number might sound sobering, but when compared to the overall activity level, it paints a different picture.
With 3.65 million skydives made by USPA members in the same year, the fatality rate comes out to 0.27 deaths per 100,000 jumps. This statistic is a testament to the significant progress made in reducing the risks associated with skydiving. To put it into context, back in 1961 when record-keeping began, there were 14 fatalities with a significantly lower level of skydiving activity.
The gradual decline in the annual number of fatalities since the late 1970s is a testament to advancements in safety protocols, equipment, and training within the skydiving community. As the popularity of the sport continues to rise, so too does the emphasis on safety, resulting in a continued decrease in the fatality rate over the years.
Conclusion: Understanding and Mitigating Risk
While skydiving carries inherent risks like any extreme sport, the statistics paint a reassuring picture of its safety when proper precautions are taken. With modern equipment, thorough training, and adherence to safety protocols, the thrill of skydiving can be enjoyed with minimal risk.
As with any adventure activity, it's essential to approach skydiving with respect for its potential dangers while also embracing the exhilaration it offers. By staying informed, following guidelines, and choosing reputable skydiving centers with strong safety records, enthusiasts can continue to experience the unparalleled freedom of flight with confidence.
So, is skydiving risky? Yes, to some extent. But with the right preparation and awareness, it's a risk that many find worth taking for the unmatched thrill and sense of achievement it provides.

What is AFF?
Our Accelerated Freefall (AFF) course trains you to become a licensed skydiver.
Want to jump solo like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible?
Well, you wild thing, our Accelerated Freefall (AFF) course trains you to become a licensed skydiver.
It all begins with a First Jump Course (FJC), which is typically held on a Saturday morning. We’ll give you necessary ground training before your first jump. The training typically covers the basics of equipment you’ll use, body positioning, parachute deployment, and emergency procedures. You’ll learn how to exit the aircraft, maintain stability during freefall, and deploy your own parachute.
In AFF, you’ll jump from 14K feet. Throughout the first few training jumps, you’ll be accompanied by two qualified instructors who jump with you to provide in-air guidance. The instructors hold onto you to help with stability and ensure a successful parachute deployment.
As you progress through the program, you’ll eventually jump with only one instructor and exit the plane without instructors holding onto you. Through this, you gain more independence and learn additional skills. You’ll gradually be introduced to more complex maneuvers, such as turns, flips, and formation flying, as you become more proficient in freefall.
The goal of AFF is to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to jump on your own. Once you successfully complete all the required jumps and demonstrate competence in various aspects of skydiving, you’ll take an online exam to demonstrate knowledge of technical aspects of skydiving thus far. If you pass, you receive your “A” license which allows you to skydive independently and with other licensed skydivers.
It's worth noting that while AFF is an accelerated training program, it still requires a commitment of time, effort, and financial resources. We offer financing at Skydive Milwaukee, and we’re always hiring! Many of our skydivers started as staff and paid for their license through weekend work at the dropzone! Check out payment options HERE.
Safety is of paramount importance in skydiving, and it is essential to train under the guidance of experienced instructors and adhere to proper protocols throughout the learning process… and, as always, have fun!
